If you had a new GPSmap with no internal antenna where would you mount this antenna? I am leaning toward a point aft of the mast and in front of the pop top. Pros and cons?
I like where you installed the antenna. Do you sail with a bimini and if you do does it hurt the BPS performance? As I posted earlier I am leaning toward a spot aft of the mast and offset to the side slightly where it won't interfere with mst raising. I wonder how the area between the two port stanchions over the swim ladder would work with the bimini?
I just bought a hand held GPS (Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx) and I was really surprised with the reception. Not only was the dodger not a problem, I still had 8 satellites while sitting inside the cabin! You might want to keep that in mind when mounting the antenna. Maybe the idea is to just find a convenient place to put it...
My antenna is on a rail mount on the stern pulpit. The antenna cable runs down to a hole through the transom (shared with the outboard motor power cables and sonar transducer cable), then along the inside of the quarter berth and up to the GPS instrument head which is on a swing mount on the starboard side of the companionway.
