was a small 5 hp Briggs motor aquired many years ago with a trade for an old go-kart, which inclued a warning that it used a lot of oil. Another engine was available then and the kids enjoyed the kart a good bit.
Now with Grandkids coming of age to kart, some refurbishing is in process and with the good motor in use on an air compressor, the oil burner was resurected. It starts like a dream...first pull every time but is an absolute mosquito fogger.
After tearing it down, sticking a ring back in the bore, the ring gap measured 134 thousanths, yikes... that is more than 1/8 inch, darn near took the whole set of feeler guages to measure .
A visit to the small engine dealer yielded some chrome rings, which measured .027 gap and if they were sized to drop in without any triming, the cylinder has a little wear but will work. The bearings are all good.
It seemed amazing that the engine started so well having such low compression.
Its hard to beat an old Briggs. My kids have out grown their kart and mini bike years ago. They rode the heck out of them for 8 years or so. I sold the kart and bike to the neighbor across the street, his kids are still riding them up and down the street. Those old Briggs are 15 years old now and still running strong.
