I'm the new owner of an '87 C-25 wing keel - does anyone know the going rate for a bottom paint job? I was planning on 2 coats of anti-fouling (I've already ordered the paint) plus there are 4 or 5 small blisters that will need to be opened up and epoxied before painting. The boat is sitting on it's trailer (on pads), so it will have to be supported on jack stands part of the time to get to everything. I've got one estimate of $50 per linear foot - this sounded a little high to me for this area (Alabama) anyone have any recent experience? Thanks -
mine cost $600 including haul out, pressure wash, paint, relaunch. I only got 1 coat. Also no blister repair. The yard charges $75/day for storage and you can do some limited of your own work during that time. I'd guess the blisters could be ignored, or if you want to fix them factor in another couple $hundred.
How about $0? (it's not exactly $0 'cause you have to buy paint, which you've already done I guess, and get a respirator and suit for sanding, and misc other supplies). Even if you're not "Mr. Handy Man", painting is pretty easy to do yourself. As for the blisters.. lot's of advice to be had here from past posts. Do a search on 'blister repair' and you'll find a lot I bet.
If it is just a few (less than 40) blisters I can walk you through the entire process. You'll save a lot and you'll have another merit badge on your troop uniform.
It isn't that hard and as Bill mentions, you just need a few supplies.
The first question is are you planning on keeping the boat on the trailer or in the water? If on the trailer except when in use then why bottom paint at all. Just fix the blisters cover with some gelcoat and go sailing. If it will be in the water most of the time then I would recommend you fix the blisters, barrier coat and bottom paint before use. Here in Northeast FL. bottom coat only (two coats)is $35 per foot. Any other repairs are extra. I would recommend you do it yourself on the trailer and save big boat units for other upgrades. If you do a search on the forum you will find many who have done their's on their trailer's and how they accomplished it to help you through the process.
