The 2006 53rd Annual Mug Race was a real winner this year. Chick-a-pea left Amity Anchorage @1600 Thursday in calm to light air. But by the time we got stuff sto'd below the wind picked right up and we sailed to the half way party in Green Cove Springs Marina. I had Gene with me to crew. He has been a friend of my for some time and he used to live aboard. So we ate the excellent B-B-Q chicken & pork and beans, slaw, watermellon and all kinds of other good stuff. Then we motored in the dark to Toccoi for the night. Friday we sailed almost the whole way to Palatka. I was hailed by Pretty Penny II to look over my starboard quarter and there she was. We both moored up at River Front Inn. The water front was a bee hive of activity and I took quite a bit of video. I'll see about uploading it later. The SW breeze stayed with us all night. We did the skippers meeting to hear about last minute updates and synchronize our watches. Saturday morning we walked to St. Andrews Church close by for a breakfast put on my the local Boy Scout Troop. And then hit the Palatka Yacht Club hospitality tent for more coffee and doughnuts. Then back to the boat to get underway. The MUG RACE does a reverse start so slower boats go first and the go fast super cats go last. My other crew, Scott, showed up right on time. He rode the shuttle provided by the Rudder Club. We were then on our way to the finish line 38 miles away. The wind stayed moderate most of the time but was shifty and gusty. My start time was 080243 and we crossed the finish about 164000 I think. I was pretty wore out by then. But we had a great time and tomorrow we'll find out the results. Just guessing I'd say there was 150 participants.
Ben, great pictures. I kept looking at PennyII and saying something is strange about the jib. Finally figured out PennyII had her drifter up. Never seen a picture of her with the drifter aloft so was a strange look. Thanks again for the pictures.
