Firstly, thanks to all who helped with the dimensions of the balanced rudder.
I am finding remarkably hard to track down rudder fittings here in the UK - it seems that most transom hung rudders here are on dinghies, and if you want a more substantial one, you have to have it fabricated. Here, we call them pintles, i assume they are the same there.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a chandlery in the US thst supplies these. With shipping, they could still work out more cheaply than getting them fabricated - and if it takes them 4 weeks to arrive, then i guess i'll be putting the final layers of varnish on the new rudder.
Catalina Direct,http://www.catalinadirect.com/ lists the top pintle(short w/hole) and bottom(long) for $12.60 each. These pintles are supposedly direct replacement parts for our rudders.
An advantage of Catalina Direct's pintles is that they fit the same holes--2-1/2" apart. Another is that they have much heavier stainless straps.
For strength and water resistance, I recommend that when you mount the new pintles, that you overdrill the holes by about three times the bolt diameter, fill with thickened epoxy, and then re-drill to the correct size. Catalina didn't do this, and the results have shown in many of the rudders I've seen.

quote:
Anyone know if Catalina Direct have an email address ? The two phone numbers listed are not available from the UK.

The 800 number is toll-free, so is only good in the US and Canada. Their tech support number, 916/843-1971, should work. They should be able to transfer you to sales and/or give you a number to reach them. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll call them from here and post a number.

I am based in Hampshire (south coast, about 1 hour from London). I may take you up on the offer, depending on what commitment i can get from Catalina Direct.
Incidentally, if your friends fancy a day in the English Channel to try out the English variant of the Catalina - specifically the twin keel model - let me know. Crew are always welcome - although the beer tends to be warm (no fridge !)
