I wanted to get more of a downward angle to the aft Reef line on the boom. My sail loft guy gave me one of these SS Eye Straps and told me to pop rivet it to the boom vertically and run the bitter end of the reef line through it and put a stopper knot in it.
The question I have is; if the bitter end of the reef line is on the starboard side of the boom, should I put the eye strap on the starboard side as well or should I put it on the port side and run the line under the boom to secure it to the eye strap? Does running the line under the boom take needed pressure off the eye strap? or is this worth worrying about?
Using eye straps and stopper knots for the reef lines is somewhat of a standard setup. This photo from the tech tips shows the two reef lines going to the eye straps on the boom.
BTW, the bitter end of the line would be the end that is taken around a cleat.
If your mainsail is loose footed, there's another alternative. I attach the end of my reefing lines by tying a loop (two turns with a bowline) around the boom just aft of the cheek block. No eye straps, no rivets, no additional holes in the boom. A similar approach, which would work whether the main were loose footed or not, would be to somehow attach the end of the line to the cheek block itself, after passing the line under the boom. The exact details would depend on the size of your reefing line and the details of your cheek blocks.
