Hi All, A friend gave me a Garmin 172C then took it back when the GPS on the boat he bought didn't work. So now I am back to buying one. I am trying to find one that will accept the charts off the internet instead of paying $$$$ for a little chip that only covers one of the lake I sail on. Can anyone help? Cheers.
Dennis, I feel your pain. I just bought the Lakes Hotspots software for the eastern US. for my Garmin 276C. Paid about $100 for it, however the software covers hundred's of lakes, but nothing on the coast line but maybe a buoy or two. The road map that was part of the software is much better than the basemap that came with the 276, I use the 276 in my truck and boat so the road map was a plus.
Lowrance H2OC and other products have free Lake and topo maps, but no raod maps. Mapcreate software runs 100.00 that covers all of the US. Check there site for the free maps, I downloaded mine to my Notebook and put it on an old SD Card I had.

When you say "free charts off the Internet" are you refering to NOAA S-57 format ENC's? If so, I don't think any GPS unit displays ENC's directly. ENC's have to be used on a computer with software like Caris Easy-ENC or Fugawi ENC. Caris is a freeware viewer that can display ENC's, but is pretty limited in capability. Fugawi is commercial navigation software that displays many different kinds of geospatial data including ENC charts, and of course it provides the interface to link your ENC chart with your GPS position in real time. It has all the tools you need to plan and record GPS routes and waypoints. But all of this fancy stuff is displayed on your PC computer screen, not on the GPS screen as far as I know. Caris Easy-ENC can be downloaded at: http://www.caris.com/products/features.cfm/prodID/33 The 5-57 ENC's for almost all US Navigable waterways can be downloaded at: http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/ChartServerV2.0/jsp/index.jsp Note: I can't seem to get into the download site myself, Firefox is saying I need a special plugin that I don't seem to have installed on this workstation.

Geez, Lake St Clair is so small, for a chart, you could probably get by with a picture drawn on a napkin!
