I just purchased a 1982 Catalina 25 and joined the association. This is my first post.
After fixing the lights, rigging, etc. the freshwater system is next. I partially filled the water tank but get nothing from the faucets at either the galley or the head. I am sure the system has been dry for some time. Is there a way to "prime" the pumps, or should I assume they are just bad?
Welcome to the Association and the board. Its so nice to see new members comming in. I know you will enjoy the group here as well as your new boat. About the water system. If the sink pump is still there and original try to pump the lever very fast. The original system basicaly works by sucking the water up to the pump. In addition if you fill the take all the way up since there is no vent water will come out of the faucet. If you have looked at all the lines I assume they are all hoked up otherwise you would have a boat full of water then you may need a new pump. Hand pump or even installing a foot pump is not costly. The pumps can be found at your local marine store, on the internet, or if you want to compare prices also check you local RV store. Best of luck. Looking forward to reading how you make out. Let us know.
I had the same problem when I bought my boat that had lain unused for several years. I went to West Marine, and they had a "faucet" hand pump rebuild kit. It replaces the O-rings, diaphram, and other pieces inside the pump. It is pretty easy to do, and now they work great! Good luck.
I considered rebuilding my galley pump, but then bought (for under $20, I think) a new pump--I think it's by Scandvik. It has a black, rounded base and larger diameter spout, and draws water on both the up and down strokes of the handle. It's a much nicer unit than my original, and IMHO, well worth a few bucks more than the rebuild kit.

I replaced my pump rather than rebuildingit. At the same time I opted to replace the lines with new and installed a ball valve on the discharge of the tank so as to be able to isolate the tank if I ever need to replace tubing again or work on the pump. John on Ms Achsa
I dismantled my pump and cleaned the crud out of it and found a restriction in the tubing to the pump. After putting the whole thing back together, it works great. Obviously, the 'o' rings and diaphram were fine. I don'think the thing was touched since it was intalled at the factory. So - you might try cleaning first before replacing or rebuilding.
