A couple of days ago, I inquired about rigging my main. I thank those of you that responded. I'm starting a new thread because I got some pix today and thought it would be better to start fresh.
The boat has a topping lift which has a block attached at the end and about 3 ft of line. I'm thinking the line is tied at the ring (at the end of the boom)up through the block on the topping lift and then what?
The block on top of the boom I figure is the outhaul which just goes to the v cleat? Would I be able to correctly rig the main with a v cleat.
Besides the Catalina Direct Owners handbook shows a completely different external outhaul setup.
If my single line reefing blocks are on the port side of the boom, what is the block on the starboard side for? And the cleat near the gooseneck on the starboard side??
There are line "guides" on the port side of the boom which face forward/aft except for the one furthest aft which faces up/down.
Finally, are the "standup" blocks on the deck near the foot of the mast for the downhaul?? Why would they not be installed equidistant from each other or the mast? Pictures don't show it but the line halyards are internal and lead aft with double sheave deck organizers.
In the picture that shows the mast, there's is a small length of ball chain (at foot of mast on the deck). What is that for?
Tks to all.

Daniel,

Your topping lift may have been routed along the port side of your boom via the block on the end of the port side boom (second picture) then through the vertical eye straps, down to the block on the deck then back to the cockpit.

I do see evidence that there may have been additional hardware on the boom before you got it so the topping lift that I described could have been a flattening reef setup also.

Yes, but it doesn't allow very much purchase to adjust the outhaul. You could just change a few blocks to increase the purchase and still utilize the V cleat.

If memory serves me correctly, the CD Handbook illustrates an external 4:1 outhaul. This is how mine is rigged, but the outhaul can be rigged any number of ways so long as it is functional and relatively easy to use.

The reefing line starts at the horizontal eye strap on the port side of the boom, up through the reef cringle,...

down through the block on the starboard side and forward to the starboard side cleat near the gooseneck.

The "line guides" on the port side are probably for an adjustable topping lift as was stated above. The one facing up/down is where the reef line terminates.

The port standup block was probably used for the aforementioned topping lift being routed back to the cabintop. As for the starboard block, it could have been used for routing the cunningham back to the cockpit, or even the downhaul or even a mainsail dousing line. It the last picture I think I see an eye strap (or is it bird poop?) between the port stand up block and the mast. If it is, maybe the previous own tied one end of the cunningham to it then routed the line up through the cunningham cringle, back down to the starboard stand up block, then back to the cabintop. Who knows???

Got me?...SOmetimes its dang hard to figure out a previous owners setup, especially if it is somewhat non-traditional. Geez, I sometimes have a hard time trying to figure out how I rigged my own boat from the previous season?

Don:
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Your response is typical of why I bought my boat in the first place. More than anything, because of the extraordinary support one can receive on this forum.

Don ... I have to say, that is absolutely one of the best and most selfless explanations I've ever seen ... you deserve a gold star ... or two ... or three ...

Like Daniel said, it's contributions like yours that make this Forum and Association the best thing going ... thanks for taking the time. I'd insert one of those kissy faces here, but it would it look like something from Brokeback Mountain

Don - your response here is excellent!

What I would like to know is how your took Daniels pix and added the red and blue lines to them? They look as authentic as if they were in the original picture!! And they look like those 1/4" New England Endura Braid Dyneema Double Braids.

Not sure I agree with one or two lines Don, but like you said, the hardest part is finding out how things were rigged by the DPO.

Is is possible instead of the topping lift, the dpo used the pig tail and used that block as the second reef?

Your welcome Daniel...Just trying to pay back for the wealth of knowledge I acquired from everyone else over the years.

Thanks Buzz, I did the picture thing because after initially writing a response, I couldn't even follow my own explanation so I had to add the pictures to make my explanation coherent to me.

John...The picture thing is kinda easy. I just saved his pictures as a bitmap on my pc then opened them up in Paint. Drew some lines. saved as a jpeg, then uploaded them to Shutterfly.

Duane...As for the block being for the second reef, since Daniel said he had a single line reef, I took that as he only had one set of reef points, although I did mention the possibility of a flattening reef for that block's use.

Yeah, I saw that on the second read. You had a lot of really good info in there and that post took a lot of time. If anybody is listening, These how to rig scenarios should be put into a directory somewhere. Even better yet, tagged with the boat numbers so that when we are all 3rd generation DPO's the new owners can sail their 40 year old boats based on our documentation.

Since I haven't asked a really dumb question for almost a week...is DPO a Darn Previous Owner?

And, what is the difference between a reef and a flattening reef?

I remain, as usual, in awe.

Dumb, Darn, Dufus etc. Previous owner

A flattening reef is generally only on mains with a shelf foot – Bigger pocket on the foot—but can be on any main. The flattening reef is a cringle a few feet up the leach of the main and essentially tightens (flattens) the leech and a bit of the foot. It’s only on the aft end of the sail.

A reef brings the sail down uniformly at both the luff and the leach.
