Hi, a couple of questions,

1) I'll be offering my Honda 9.9 for sale on the swap meet soon and would like to know what year it is. I think it's a mid 90s model but would like to be more specific. Is there a serial number located somewhere that can identify the year manufactured?

2) My "new" 2001 Honda 8 hp kicks up several times when I accelerate in reverse. I should mention that it's mounted on a new 4-spring Grahauer motor mount. What do I need to do to prevent this?

Thanks for you help and happy sailing,

Bill

I recall an ID tag by one of the transom clamps, and an engine S/N somewhere on the side of the block inside the cowl--I think they're two differet numbers. From the numbers on my Honda 50 (which is at my house--the 8 is a few miles away), any significant digits are not obvious. You might need help from Honda or a dealer.

My 2003 Honda 8 seems to lock automatically in reverse--it's never kicked up, and I've cranked it pretty hard a number of times. I wonder if your tilt-lock is not functioning properly.

Bill,
Here is the link to the online motor manuals.

Dave is right. There should be a tag on the mounting frame with the serial number. However I do not think the serial number can be readily translated to the model year like a car VIN. You could call a Honda dealer or repair shop and they can relate the model number to the year.

When I needed parts for my '99 9.9 Honda, the local dealer got all the info they needed from the serial number, which I took off the port side of the motor, stamped into the casting, just below the removable cowling.
When I gave them the serial number, they knew what year it was.

Finally, located serial number stamped in front of block behind wires, etc. Took a flashlight to read it. Difficult place to find and read. It is BABF 1207515.
I'll have to contact a dealer as the number doesn't seem to correspond to more recent info above. Seems to have a bunch of fives. Previous owner thought original owner purchased in 1996. I'll list it for sale when I can determine year.

Thanks to all who responded.

Bill

PS: I'm going to list it now and determine the exact year asap. Check the Swap Meet for pictures.

Well, Honda dealer tells me that's not the right serial number after all. Says it's on the transom clamp. It wasn't. Now says I've got to look on the steering tube upright, whatever that is.

Dave, you could be right. Oh yeah, I think my tilt lock is in tilt position rather than run!
