Sometime ago someone posted damage done to their keel while loading the boat on the trailer. If the WK doesn't line up just right while running it up on the trailer the wing can hit the angle iron that holds the keel support to the trailer. The last time I launched the wind caught me and I knew the keel hit the angle iron. When I pulled the boat out to ready for a trip to the gulf I dreaded the possibility of my keel being damaged. I was lucky, no damage.

I decided to take some 2" PVC pipe, made one cut end to end with my jig saw. Pried it opened and slid it around the angle iron, it popped back closed. This will hide that sharp edge of the angle iron.

In previous posts on this forum, the idea of using pipe (foam) insulation for the same purpose has been suggested. Get the 2" insulation at Home Despot, cut it, and attach with duct tape or similar.

Not necessarily a better idea, just another one to consider.

Kevin I tried the foam and when my keel hit the support it cut right through the foam, that's why switched to the PVC.

Tom,

My trailer is off getting a third wheel welded on, so I can't measure it, and one of my crew has volunteered to make up the furler protection and also the 2" PVC to protect the keel on the trailer. My problem is, with no trailer, I can't tell him how long to cut the PVC for trailer uprights? Do you remember by chance?

Thanks in advance.

Kevin, I don't recall off the top of my head, but the trailers in the back yard. I take a measurement tomorrow for you.

I measured the PVC this AM, the length is 22" and the id of the PVC is 2" (you can use larger but no smaller). You'll have to work it on the angle iron, you may need a couple screwdrivers to help pry the cut you make open enough to get it started, once started it gets easier.
