I am considering installing a wheel guard on my 2005 WK (#817). Does anyone have any advice on whether the guard is a good thing or not. Does the guard get in the way? How hard is it to install? Is there a better place to get one rather than Edson? (they want about $350!).

On several occasions I have staggered around like a drunk sailor (nothing but water that day) and found myself grabbing the compass hoping not to break anything. (Maybe balance is the first thing to go eh?) So, my first concern is a good grab hold however I am also interested in cup holders (for the water of course) and possibly a mount for my hand held GPS.

Any suggestions with 'regard' to the 'guard' would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

A wheel guard is a good thing... not hard to install. It will give the needed cockpit handhold plus a place to hang and mount things.

Concur, wheel guard is good thing to help keep neck firmly attached to shoulders. It is easy to install and you can order it with either mounting option at no extra cost. WM had a good price on them at one time, but I don't know what it is at this time, since I can't get to my catalog. You might go to our links page and go to the sponsors websites for price comparsions..

We only see the wheel guard as a positive upgrade for all the reasons mentioned...
.. Handy handhold.
.. Place to hang stuff
.. Future home of the Cockpit table

Now, if only Edson or someone else would come out with a less pricy folding wheel! I know we can remove it, but eventually it or that little friction wheel that holds it on will take a swim :(

Has anyone installed a smaller wheel?

A smaller wheel would reduce the all ready poor steering leverage ratio.

Arlyn,
would your upgrade to the steering system compensate for a smaller wheel.

I think the standard wheel is 24" dia, just 2" on either side would make a big difference with moving in behind the wheel, that would be a 20" wheel. Maybe I'll find a wooden ships wheel with pegs that can be removed

Paul.... yes, the steering conversion leverage gain would allow a smaller wheel.

Paul:

If you're really feeling wild, you could use a small-radius hot-rod style steering wheel from a ski boat and pretend you have a Macgregor!!!

So, sounds like a guard is in my future. Any thoughts on the straight style verses the 'bent' one? How about height, seems there is a 'short' and a 'long' version.

Also, when you mount this is it a simple drill 4 holes, seal with silicon (or such) and thru bolt? How about backing plates etc?

Thanks for the GREAT feedback, this is what the forum is all about.
