Does anybody have a Honda 9.9 (BF9.9A early 90’s) and use it to charge your batteries? If so do you use any type of regulator/charge controller between the motor and the batteries? I am concerned about the motor overcharging the batteries. I have standard deep cycle marine batteries.
Thanks
Gene

Gene,
I do not have a 9.9 hp but I do have a 1999 8hp model. If they are the same the circuit is protected by a 5 amp fuse so the charge rate should be less than 5A. At that rate you will be lucky to maintain your batteries at a full charge if you are using anything other than a marine radio. And that only pertains to situations where you will be running your engine for hours on end. They do not mention the need for the a controller in their literature so I would doubt it is needed, nor have I ever heard of anyone installing one for that purpose.

I ran a powered sub with surround speakers (Altec Lansing, intended to be used by a computer but sounds great in the C25), charged my I-pod, cabin lights (at night) and a fan(part of the day for my beagle puppy) all weekend and the motor kept the battery full. We really only motored in the evenings when the wind was faint or non existent.

One of my crew was a friend from out of town who happens to have a masters in electrical engineering and is typically my go-to guy when it comes to electrical questions. I had him look over my electrical system as well as my future electrical system plans to make comments or suggestions. One was the output of my motors DC charging system. After measuring the output with a Digital Volt Meter he seemed to think it should have some type of charge controller so as to not cook a battery. Just was wondering what other Honda owners were using if anything.

Thanks for the info Joe!
