My Tuesday night racing fleet has a Cal 25, which seems to beat us on a consistent basis. Besides being butt-ugly, the Cal also has a dirty bottom. Their sails look nicely cut, and their sail trim is usually good, but I can't account for their consistent speed advantage. We rate the same as them in PHRF. From the specifications I've found on the web, they are lighter (4000 lbs. vs. 4500) and have more sail area (286 vs. 270).
Does anybody else race against a Cal 25? Results?

I've never raced a Cal 25 against a Catalina 25, but have crewed on a Cal 25 in a race, and it had very nice sailing qualities. Although they're getting pretty old, they're still a very popular and competitive racing class. I've heard them referred to as a "poor man's J24," and they do bear some resemblance to the J24, both in appearance, as well as their behavior. I imagine they would be hard for a standard rig to beat, but a tall rig could probably beat them more often than not.
