I met a new boat owner at my marina over the weekend. He just purchased a used Catalina Capri 26. He did not have any boat registration numbers and I asked him when is he going to get his numbers. He said he did not have to because the boat is documented. He said that when the boat is documented the boat does not have to be registered in any state.
Does anyone know anything about this subject?

It appears that the Capri 26 may be around the border line to qualify for documentation and may be one of the smallest documented sailboats.

Perhaps some of the C25 owners know whether the C25 qualifies... I can't remember hearing of one that was documented but I've not been paying attention either.

I do know there was a bruha a few years ago in the Houston area, it seems that documented boats from the North East had been brought to Texas and were enjoying avoiding taxes as a documented boat must indentify her home port. Texas started taking pictures and if a boat stayed too long, argued that her home port was where she was primarily docked and started levying taxes to the chagrin of many owners.

I was told by that the C250 could not be documented because it did not meet certain criteria. There are guidelines and formula utilizing length, weight, etc. and at least one of them does not meet documentation standards.

Even if boats our size are able to be documented, they must still comply with the laws of the states in which they are kept. This means they will still need to be registered with the state and are subject to any applicable taxes.

A gentleman in our yacht club tried to take the Coast Guard to court over a ticket he got for not having registration numbers on his documented 25' Coronado. He lost the case. Twenty-five footers can be documented, but must also be registered in the state in which it is primarily used.
