Does anyone know if i can replace my c-78-14-st tires on my trailer with st-205/75/r-14-- I will change all of the Orig. tires at once if they will fit--this is the orig trailer that came with the catalina 25--1978
I think you can. It should be easy enough to take your spare to the tire dealer and he can tell you immediately. I recently changed from 14" rims and tires to 15". I wanted the extra load capacity. It was not easy in that I had to change out the fenders too. Turned out to be much more expensive than I had originally thought, but isn't that true for most boat projects?
Thanks for the reply--I am also going to go with new rims also--just wondering if there was enough clearance side to side for the difference in the witdth--load ramge is 1760 lb per tire--any additional thoughts
I run G70-14-ST bias ply tires rated for 1870lbs at 50 psi. They were the heaviest duty 14" tire I could find.
That puts me right at 7,500 lbs total capacity which exceeds the max rating of the stock EZ Loader trailer (7,000 lbs). Last time across the scales, I was right at 6,500 boat/trailer so I do have about a thousand pounds of 'headroom' with this set of tires... but I'm only 500 lbs from the axle ratings! That's why I keep all 'extra' gear in the bed of the truck. (Outboard Engine, Toolbox, Rudder etc)
The 'G''s are basically size-equivalent to ST215-14D's. I've had no problems with them at all including clearance with the fenders (although there is not a lot of room left in there).
I noted that there are some common threads that surface in many of the discussions of catastrophic trailer tire failure.
1)If you are loaded right to the rating of your tires, you're in for trouble.
2)Many of the stories start with "I'd just slowed down from 75 when..."
I do not trailer a Catalina, but an RV. Carlisle tires are considered the worst in the RV community...can't speak from experience, but what virtually everybody says. Check the links above...in the first link every poster but one gave Carlisle a one star rating out of five.
