Well I finally decided to do the seal replacement on the marine head I havent been able to use the last 2 years. It wasn't nearly as bad a job as I thought it would be. The problem I am having now is a structrual breakdown with the pump cylinder. It works great but when I was testing it water was squirting out the flange connection to the outlet hose. At first I though no big deal, it's just lake water. This morning I was thinking more about it though and remembered, "Hey this is the outlet to the holding tank." That means the water that will come out in actual use is not just lake water. I went to west marine but the online catalogue didn't show any replacement parts except for gaskets, etc. Any clues as to what I should do, besides bringing a bucket for next weeks trip?
Here's how I would suggest you proceed:

Determine exactly what head you've got.

Get your hands on an exploded drawing/parts list for that unit. (Check manufacturer's Website.)

Once you have a definite manufacturer's part number, determine the cost of special ordering what you need. (Possible special order routes: contact manufacturer through their Website, Defender Industries special order dept, your local boat pieces parts peddler, West Marine, etc.)

Compare repair costs to cost of replacing the entire head with for instance a Raritan PH-II.

(You should always have an appropriate bucket on board anyway, just in case...)

-- Leon Sisson
I have the exploded drawing, kind of appropriate to the problem. Contacted West Marine this morning, the fellow at tech support said he'll call Groco in the morning and find out about what can be done and will call back. No matter what, I'll still have to use the bucket this weekend.
Matt, I'd call Groco myself in your situation. That's what I did when I had a piece break, I bought directly from them. Groco was very helpful and friendly. I was really impressed with their customer service. The piece came with exact instructions for the repair.
West Marine has Jabsco heads on sale - $40.00 off I believe. The Jabsco has same bolt pattern & hoses. I just replaced my original head this weekend, and it was a 20 minute job, The Admiral says it is easier than cleaning! With my West Marine coupon, the head was about the same as the repair kit. Boater's World has the Groco HF manual head for $ 199.00 in the store, $ 209.00 (including shipping) on the internet. They told me it was out of stock and I'd probably have to wait 4/5 weeks. Imagine my surprise when I received it 3 days later. Don't know what happened but it was a pleasant surprise.
It's always plesant when you have a head that works. John from West Marine tech support called the next morning with the part number. My wife answered and placed the order, it should be here toot suiet (or however the french spell that). Good sailing and good smells to all.
