So I got brave and pulled my through hull speed transducer this morning with the boat in the water. Y'all were right, it was an easy, non-event.

But now I am puzzles. There is a little bit of mud or sand clinging to the hub of the part of the tranducer that spins, but it spins freely (at least when I spun it with my finger). I did not have anyone with me, so I could not spin it and see if the display indicated speed.

So is just a bit of mud enough to take this thing out? Any recommendations on cleaning it? Swirling it in water is not going to do much, it gets that whenever I sail. So I guess I get a toothbrush out or something...

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin, get a small center punch or nail and push the pin out that holds the paddle wheel in place. Then you can remove the wheel and clean everything with a tooth brush and some soap. Then put the wheel back in and install the pin. Be sure to the wheel is installed in the correct direction. The top of the transducer should have arrows on it to show which is the front to help. You might also want to get some plumbers grease and lube the seals before reinstalling. Since I am in salt water I remove mine after each use.
