Can anyone tell me what the thingamajigs are that hold the sail slugs to the sail? Mine are plastic and go through the grommets on the mainsail, and hold the sail slug which is in the mast track. I need to get a few spares, but couldn't find them in the WM catalog. This is probably because I don't know what they're called.
Using the keyword search of "Shackle" I was able to find this at the West Marine website. WM part number 4474151
Has anyone ordered this for their C25? My concern is that, while this looks as though it will work, I have purchased another variety of these from WM only to find that they were too large to fit through the grommet.
Since you will be up here a day early, call the west marine and see if they have any in stock, if so have Allison or Cal hold a few for you....make sure you have the part number when they call. If they don't, the local lofts will have a couple. (Sobstad and Doyle, probably Quantum too.)
Just a reminder for anyone using all plastic shackles... replace 'em every few years. Sunlight weakens them. If you had one break, I'd start getting suspicious about the rest.
I had a half dozen 'unzip' the main on a blustery day. Created a few moments of excitement, it did. (Yodaspeak)
I converted to all stainless shackles... with little clear plastic 'protectors' that keep them from chafing the sail. The main may be in rags, but the shackles will still be there.
I used bainbridge aqua batten 1/2 inch slugs. I attach them to stainless shackels and the little plastic protectors. I carry a bunch. Have had them pop in heavy winds after a few years.
A friend of mine had somewhat older plastic shackles on his main and during a particularly windy day, he too experienced the un-zipping of his mains'l from the mast.
I unzipped the main on my boat when I test sailed it during the sea trial of my survey. Maybe I shouldn't have attempted a jibe when the wind was kicking up two foot waves on Lake Norman. But the broker's rep told me to do it, so what the heck. Ended up on a broad reach with the main sheeted all the way in and the boat didn't flip over. I thought "this boat can take a lot" After buying the boat I got new slugs from Catalina Direct. They howled when I told them the story. I keep a few extras in my rigging box, just in case.
I just bought my C25 and went out the first time and lost four slides/slugs, the previous owner had instaled some cheap ones and the went that day... Any way, I just order a whole new set of the stainless steel and plastic ones from Catalina Direct, 3.49 set, I only needed the four but just replace them all and use the old ones as spares....thought it was a pretty good deal. Hope that helps.
I wish they wouldn't even manufacture the all-plastic slugs, so that sailmakers couldn't save a few pennies using them. My new main from Ullman is a beautiful sail, but marred by the plastic slugs that I know I will have to replace eventually. The slugs with stainless steel bails cost only a few dollars more for the entire set (for a C-25 main) and they last forever. Why would anyone even bother with the plastic ones?
