Has anyone made or found a screen for the forward hatch? (1983) We are going to be anchoring in potentially buggy areas and will need the protection. I am leaning towards making my own with cloth screen material and velcro, but the shape of the hatch is not square. Not sure how to get a nice clean fit.
Diligent in my frugality, I just bought mosquito netting from Campmor.com that is intended to cover a baby stroller or crib - about $5.00 for a 48” x 48” net with elastic base. I haven’t tried it yet, but I figure I’ll just place it over the open hatch and ‘seal’ the bottom of the net around the hatch gasket with a cord.
I cut and sewed netting into a sort of pup-tent shape to fit over the open fwd hatch. I included a large tubular hem into which I threaded a string of hollow lead fish net weights to hold it down to the deck.
Our PO installed a screen on the inside of the hatch using a velcro border all the way around. Works perfectly. We just loosen the two forward corners to get to the hatch dogs.
Several years ago I bought a screen that drops over the open hatch and is made for the catalina. It has a chain sewn into the bottom to keep it in place. I will look this weekend an see if I can finf the name of the company.
Hi Have one just like Steves. It works great. Today I read up in the Vbirth for a couple hours and watched the fish flies dance above me on the net. I was thinking about doing the outside tent type with lead in the bottom, but thought that if a good enough wind came up during the night, it could be lost over the side and the lead would just zoom it to the bottom. Cheers.
I bought a bugmasters screen - See photo on following link. http://www.sogeman.com/sogeman.html It has very fine mesh, lead weights in the hemming along the perimeter to keep it in place and it has a plastic case to store it when it is not in use. It also has a fairly hefty price tag.
I either bought it from Catalina Direct or Defender.
If you make your own, get the softest or stretchiest bug screen cloth you can find, as the screen will have to fit over the hatchdogs. The foreward hatch is 'non-conforming' as a shape. My bug screen is a very soft fine screen with velcro edging. I used the same screen on my hatch board vents and a cover over a quarter berth vent.
