I did not have my camera with me today, but I went to replace the mast step with the new CD version along with the halyard plate. The first thing I noticed was the the old mast step, the new mast step, and the halyard plate all had different hole patterns. So in drilling the new patern, using the new mast step as the templete, I drilled all the way through the hull in the aft holes. When I went below to bolt them through, I was shocked to see the half of both new holes were half in the wood center support and half out. So I had to, VERY reluctantly, chisle out enough room for the washing and nut. The other thing I found was a channle cut out underneth the old mast step were the mast light wires had been rerouted. Exposed to the elements is the wook coring directly beneth the mast step. Luckly the wood does not seem soft. I 5200 the hell out of it and will check in next year to see if it needs fiberglass. The other thing I found was ONE clevis pin in all of the stays where they connect to the deck and chainplates. All the other seven had ACO normal steel bolts that are half the size of the hole for the clevis pins. All the bolts are rusted and bent from the force of the stay. The windex is shot, there is the base of an antenna but no antenna, the shives are cracked and missing bits from the sides, the wiring for the lights fell out of the mast as soon as we raised it. I will take pics of the finished product....but I am suprised that the PO did not experience some sort of catastraphic failure. sorry for the hacked up writing, but I am waiting here for all my students to come to class and I thought I'd whip this out. CHeers.

The only thing that works on an old boat is the owner.

That's good, Rick! I haven't heard that one before.
