Last fall when lowering the mast on my C25, we had an "incident" which is requiring replacement/repair of the mast step. I had been under the impression that "Prime Time" was a standard rig (previous owner never mentioned anything else, and I never measured). Imagine my surprise when looking at the old SS step to find on the underside the notation "tall rig" in marker. So I went and measured the mast. Guess what? It is 30' tall, and "Prime Time" is a tall rig C25. I duly ordered a new tall rig mast step from Catalina Direct. The new mast step is 1.5" longer on the base than the old one and has mounting points that are not supported on the cabin top. I am in the process of building up the cabin top to provide support under the forward mounting points. I could move the step back the 1.5" but that would require moving all of the chain plates back 1.5". I think that this would have a major effect on the sailing perforamce of the boat (i.e. center of effort would shift backwards changing the balance of the helm).
Has any one else replaced the mast step on a tall rig and encountered a similar problem?
re: the location of the step on the cabin top, it is the location of the mast bolt that determines the step placement, not the mounting holes. Hold the steps side by side on the cabin top and line up the bolt slots, what do you get? On my 89 Catalina decided to go with a longer step so the aft holes would clear the post and through bolt into the salon, the forward holes through bolt in front of the compression post in the head. Old steps screwed into the deck above the compression post.
