I need a new computer. I hate Windows. I want to try a Mac. Don't know anything about them. Can I run all my non Microsoft programs on a Mac? What can't I run? Will I be lost with a Mac? Any advice? Can you point me to a non-techno site that explains some of this? I am not a computer geek and don't have the time to become one. Dan
I am a Mac user. If you need to run proprietary windows software you just need to stick with Windows. XP Pro is a fine OS and getting better all the time. The reason there are Mac users is because we find ourselves being so much more successful with a computer than we ever thought we would be. Macs make people like using a computer. Of course the newest macs will boot either Windows or Mac OS X. The rule is never buy version 1 of anything but Mac is notorious for doing things right so the new Intel based machines may already be rock solid. There as been a Windows emulator for years but it has problems with peripherals and problems are not why people buy Macs so I never recommend it. I have never met anyone who regretted buying or using a Mac and the local user groups are wonderful. Bottom line though is you need to figure this out on your own, go to an Apple store and have a look. (Even if it is Comp USA, one thing that has been a hoot to watch is all of the Mac converts on the Comp USA sales floor, when they demo something it works and the customer does not think they are idiots!)
Go ahead and get the Mac if you want. I am using a Mac right now also. I am a computer consultant. I've been in the business for 31 years - I work almost exclusivly on PC's. I use - a mac! don't be afraid of chainging OS's but be aware of software you may need to purchase. Macs come with a lot of software out of the box, so check them out.
The new Macs with the Intel chip are supposed to run Windows programs, but I've not seen that "in the flesh." I much prefer Macs -- they will run Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) without a hitch. The Mac browser and email programs, Safari and Mail, I find much better than Explorer and Outlook. If you're running more dedicated PC programs, take them to the Apple store and ask the people to load and run them on the new machines.
Everyone else in my office uses a PC, and they're constantly having problems with them. I've used Macs for many years, and other than a hard drive that died after about four years, I've never had an issue.

And I've heard this from a lot of people and that is exactly why I'm thinking about a mac. Thanks to all of you for the replys.
