My boat needs a couple of new 24's. Anybody have any recommendations as to brand or is anybody aware of anything on sale?

Not sure where you are located, but COSTCO, our local warehouse store, has dual-purpose marine 24's for under $50.00.

I know it's an old thread, but...

I am also intersted in a new battery. I race quite a bit, so at most it will be one battery. I am considering a motorcycle or similar, but for now I am sticking to looking at 24s. The wight is down near the keel anyway. If you have to have it, that is a good place for it.

The Costco/Wally World 24s are Lead/Acid, yes? I am replacing a Lead/Acid that has always worked well. On the other hand, the modern batteries (Gel, AGM) sound better. I have not had a problem, (battery box) but with a full main, long stick and a 155 when the gusts come across we really end up on our ear. (I have sank the windows.) It seems like a sealed (or mostly sealed) battery would be cheap insurance.

On the gripping hand, $50 (rather than $100+) saves money for beer!

Anyone bought a gel or AGM that they really like?

I always go to sears and ask for the biggest, best that will fit. I never worry about my batteries.

Golf Cart batteries are the way to go!
I got mine for $70.00 a piece and it takes two to make 12 volts.
I can play the cd all day and well into the night as well as cabin lights and the solar panel keeps them charged.
I even left the CD playing when I went to work on the boat this spring and when I came back a week later it was still playing.

After the original "Catalina" batteries that came with the boat started losing their ability to hold a full charge after 9 years, I picked up a pair of Sears marine, deep discharge Diehard batteries that were fine for 8 years. After that, I replaced them just because I figured the didn't owe me any money after 8 seasons.

I think they set me back 60 bucks on sale.

I'm on my second set of Diehards and they're still good as new.
