It was a great opportunity to attend the National Regatta, this was our first one and the Edgewater Yacht club on Lake Erie was wonderful the Yard staff,John and Gary went out of their way to help us get in and OUT of the water ASAP,with No Hassle. The food at the resturant was Reasonably priced and GOOD. We will come back again and stay longer... Many Thanks to our sponsers and Catalina Yachts. I would like to see the regatta again at this venue. Congrats to ALL the winners and people who attended. When Duane puts the Photos on line Check them out. We had INTERESTING racing . It was great to meet many for the first time and renew old acquaintances. Looking forward to next year. Alan & Eileen

"The clink of an anchor - chain, the 'Yo-Ho!' of a well time crew, the flapping of huge sails - I love all these sounds."
It was great being docked beside so many C25's especially Alan and his crew. I have done my share of passages at night, but to race at night.....well a first for me, Thanks to my crew Jake V. and Al Eckhart. With out Jake's navigation and programing of the magellan, and Al's excellent sheet handling and tactics advice I'm sure I would have been truly out to sea.....
A note to members: I know with gas so high it is a real big expense to haul to a nationals event, but having made it finally, do all you can to get to one. I really had a great time.
I want to echo everything all the others have said. The event was well organized, and Cleveland really knows how to throw a great party! The race committee gave us a neat and challenging variety of race courses that tested our navigation and night racing abilities, as well as more traditional race courses. It was fun to meet the frequent forum chatters, and to renew acquaintance with people who attended past regattas.
When we pulled the boat out, it appeared that the folding prop was partly deployed while we were racing, and we weren't able to be competitive. Because of it, the boat didn't want to tack or turn or coast or accelerate to speed or point. It hurt the boat's performance in every way. It wasn't anyone's fault. I believe the current expression is "stuff happens," (or something to that effect). I was disappointed for Kip, because he did an amazing job of preparing the bottom and keel for the regatta. I don't think I've ever seen a better racing prep, including the top-line racers on the Chesapeake. It's too bad others didn't have a chance to see it. Although Kip is fairly new to racing, he did a great job at the helm. Before the regatta, Derek gave 10:1 odds against us winning, which turned out to be pretty accurate, but I think, absent the half-deployed prop, the inboard engine boat is much better than that, and, with it's handicap allowances, it could win in any given year. I hope Kip tries again.
Kip - you should be able to center your prop shaft then put the motor in reverse to lock it in place with the power off. This should keep it from spinning while under way and deploying.
As the others have said, we all had a awesome time, on the water and off. Thank you Duane!. Now, when I watch the tell tales, they talk to me in Steve's voice....bareoff,...getting lifted,...headup,...don't pinch,....steer for speed! Thanks Steve! What a great experience!

Speaking as a past host and a member of the association at large I could easily see a period of time where there was a permanent venue for the nationals and regional events by anyone who wanted to organize one. I am curious about how easy it was to attend a nationals during the Cleveland race week. (I am not bidding nor do I intend to bid.) Here in Kansas we sort of specialize in ease of attending. Our facility handles boats very effectively and parking and such are trivial. What I am curious to hear is how easy was this event to attend? Parking; trailer parking; launching; in-water storage; hotels, and such.
Frank, from my viewpoint attending the nationals at Edgewater Yacht Club could not reasonably have been any easier. To get to EYC, you take major freeways until the exit that dumps you within just a few hundred hards of the entrance to the club. This means there are no city streets that you have to manuever within. I went up I-71, to 2, to the exit to the club. Easy peasy.
Raising the mast and lauching the boat were again as easy as possible. I opted to use the EYC dock staff for this, which was performed at no charge to me, except for my tip to them. The dock manager, John, was very experienced, friendly and easy to get along with, as were his entire dock staff. Parking was provided at the club. The dock staff took our trailer and stored it for us in a locked area. Retrieving was the same, but in reverse order.
The wife, crew and I slept on the boat, and were concerned that there would be tons of partiers keeping us up. We are not partiers. We were pleasantly surprised that there was no partying on the docks, only at the club house, and even then during reasonable hours.
Others can speak about hotels, but with the EYC being right downtown, I'm sure there were hotels of every budget available within minutes of the docks.
As an adjunct to Ben’s post, there is a federally funded state park ramp less than ¼ mile from the club and its about a 2 minute sail. Kip or Jack might be able to add additional data about the ramp.
Parking during the event is less than an 1/8th of a mile from the docks at the State Park. People staying on their boats have the ability to bring their cars inside the fence during the evenings, provided they move them again in the morning prior to racing. There is close to an unlimited amount of parking for our purposes.
On the water we had our own start. Only 4 fleets were on our course for Saturday and Sunday with the remaining fleets on Course two. If we would have had 20 or so more boats, we might have had a strong opportunity to get our own course.
There are a minimum of 3 PRO boats on the water per course. Each boat having a minimum of 1 PRO onboard for mark setting, in most cases there are 2 PRO’s on each boat.(Between active, and expired P.R.O.’s Edgewater has about 25…13 of the active 30 listed at US Sailing in Ohio are EYC Members) MD boat, and some spectator boats are available. The jury for protests is normally made up of 3 US Sailing Judges and barring the fact that they are all from the US they would be the equivalent of an international Jury such as those in Key West or other larger Venues.
Parties – usually 2 bands, food after Thursday and Friday – Beer Truck all week. Blender Party on Saturday…..Professional photographer all week selling pics – some years he does aerial photos too.
FYI Driving tip: Next year exit 71 at 150th and take it all the way to Clifton, you’ll cut off about 15 minutes of going through the city and back out.
I Would echo what Ben said, My wife and I and our crew stayed at the TravelLodge in lakewood,5 minutes away, The club also launched our boat attached and dropped the mast could not have been easier, thats one reason my wife said lets GO..The cost of accomidations at the TravelLodge was Very reasonable. The food at the Yacht Club Was excellant and reasonably priced. We were very pleased
