It happened, the co-owner of my '82 SR/WK had a run-in with a Sunfish right in the mouth of the harbor and ran the boat into the rocks along the harbor entrance. We pulled the boat on Sunday, and the damage to the wing keel is minor. The rudder suffered a gouge, but otherwise is ok and repairable. But the hull got a one foot long crack through the upper bolt holes for the lower gudgen (sp?) which is not minor. Bummer! The gudgens are old and now the upper one is twisted, pretzel style, from the cotter pin that didn't give ( I know, it's not supposed to) when the rudder was forced upwards. The lower pintle was bent out at about 30 degrees and is now toast also. Both gudgens and pintles need to be replaced. Catalina Direct has the replacement gudgens listed, but they do not have pintles listed anywhere (that I can find). Can any of you expert sailboat parts buyers send me in the right direction for rudder pintles?
I am sorry about the accident. Rough stuff, it sounds like - your co-owner must have hit pretty hard to crack the transom. (Speaking as one who has been aground.)
Call CD for your parts.
For some reason they are not (currently?) listed on the 'site, but I bought a set just a couple of months back. They had them to me (in Michigan) in a week or so. I can't imagine them discontinuing them - I beleieve they are the same on the '22.
You can also get them from Catalina. The prices are similar, but you would have to call. Really it would be best to get a set of improved gudgeons and a new set of pintles from CD, in my opinion.
What a drag. When I bought my boat, the Ps and Gs were in the same shape and CD had a new set to me in a week. It would have been faster if I paid the extra money for overnight, but it was the middle of winter. The crack should not be hard to fix. It is on a flat surface and easy to get to. Cheers.
Paul I just ordered (and received) the gudgeons from CD. The pintles are on the same page in the handbook/catalog as the gudgeons so they definitely sell them. As I recall they're about $19 each I think, same as the gudgeons. Just give them a call - they can help you.
Thanks all for your input. I'll call CD. As for the crack itself, it passes through the two upper bolt holes for the lower gudgeons, about four or five inches above the corner of the stern/hull bottom. I'll try to post pictures during the repair. Right now, the crack doesn't show up on camera very well, but it sure makes me cry when I look at it "in person"
Sorry to jump on to this topic so late. I replaced my pintles and gudgeons year or so ago with ones from CD. You are going to need to cut a hole in the cockpit side of your transom to get to the upper gudgeon bolts. CD,WM, Defender et all sell inspection plates to cover the hole. Don't forget to use large washers or backing plates for the bolts.
Just a note of caution - I found CD Beckson plate a bit snug. I think it might be for a C22. I got the hole centered ok but the two outer bolts are really hard to get at; I didn't notice this until I had installed the outer ring (whatever that is called). You might think about getting a 5" Beckson instead.
Thank you for your input. I crawled into the q-berth this weekend and removed the nuts and bolts for the lower gudgeon. While I was in there I examined the inner hull and was surprised to find that there seems to be no damage, TTL (thank the Lord). The metal backing for the gudg is also in good shape and still well bedded. But when I removed the gudgeon it is apparent that the outer hull is cracked and pushed inward, and the core between inner and outer is crushed. My plan of attack is to cut away the outer hull about 3/4 inch on each side of the crack and the area that the gudgeon was resting on. Then I want to dig out the core between the inner and outer hull skins an additional 1 inch to provide a 'key' for the new fiberglass. I'll then build up the resulting cavity with glass fabric back out to the outer hull surface. Since I have never worked with gel coat, I will probably fair the surface with body filler and paint the surface with a color matched paint from the auto paint supply. Any comments on this plan?

Unless Catalina made some modifications after 78, this is not true. I replaced both of my gudgeons this past spring working through access panel in the aft end of the quarterberth.
