Today in the Puget Sound, The Crab season opened. I dropped the 3 pots in at 7am. This is my first time crabbin, so I put a couple of chicken legs in each of them. Has a crab ever had chicken? Probably not, but... everyone loves chicken!

At 5 the crew and I went to see what the crab-lotto had in store for us. All 3 pots were put it about 50 yards apart.

First pot was really heavy. It had 5 males and all were keepers. Chicken is gone.

2nd pot was empty and chicken was gone.

3rd had no crab and the bait was untouched!!!

I guess it is fishing.

Yum.

Tom,
Crabs like meat, any kind of meat. Chicken is, supposedly, one of their favorites. We use chicken backs, necks, guts and skin. Buy a whole chicken and use the scraps. Most commercial crabbers use fish heads that are available from commercial fishermen.

Try putting the bait in mesh bags before putting it in the crab pot. It keeps the small fish from swimming in and eating your bait.

Dungeness?

Down here (N Calif) they molt in the mid-summer
Season closes, no loss as they are no good
to eat when molting anyway.

They look good, but if we caught any it would be for the admiral and family as I'm cronically alergic to shellfish (we found out when I came to the USA and ate real crab for the first time - ugly!)

Do you get lobsters too?

Paul

No lobsters here. When I was growing up in South Florida, Lobster was on the menu quite often. Sorry to hear about the shellfish alergy. It is quite a treat. These dungeness crabs are very meaty.

Have tried everything for bait, but just can't seem to find any crabs here in Oklahoma.

Found crabs here in Arkansas but they walk on two legs and drive stinkpotters!

We use to set out traps when I was a boy (alooong time ago) off of Dauphine Island, AL and would use the same bait (chicken parts) with great results. The traps where almost always full.

Tried it a few years ago 6 days straight and got nothing. I'm guessing the shrimpers in the area have pretty much done away with the blue crab in those parts. When I was a boy the shrimpers never came in as close to shore as they do now.

Paul, sorry about the alergy. That would be really tough!
