I am getting ready to lower the mast on our 2004 WK for the first time since new. It's in the water and I don't have the rear mast support. I only need to have it down for about an hour to remove the topping lift and put two attach points on the upper portion of the mast. Does anyone know how high above the top of the sternrail seats that the mast would ride with the support in place? I am going to build a support that sits on the top of the stern rail seats that will hold the mast temporarily.
For what you want to do, you can just get some carpet or something to protect the mast, and set the mast on the rail over the gas tank. I did not get my support either (by mistake), and the boat actually arrived on a trailer from Catalina packed this way.
But, if you make the support, the mast sits approximately 16" above the level of the rear top rail (not the seat) of the stern rail seats.
Joe, are you doing this on the water? if so, you'll want the mast as far forward as you can get it to work on the mast head. I would use an A frame wedged between the cockpit seats to hold up the back of the mast and wrap a thick towel around the pulpit to secure the base of the mast (which you could move well forward so that you can easily work on the masthead.)
just be careful of the spreaders, if it's too low, they'll contact the deck, not good.
