I was considering a dingy for trips to shore when anchoring out
from the anchoring ball. It is usually myself.wife and golden retriever, so about 475 lbs of people. I have looked at a 8.5 ft
inflatable with an inflatable floor powered by a 2.5-4 hp 2 stroke ob,
Are the Baltik/Saturn or Blue Pacific PVC boats worth the $6-700
price tag, I figured the boat will be stored bellow deck or in my garage when not used . Any suggestions? Thanks

Jesse, we have a similar set up, just a roll up without the inflatable floor, PVC. I think the boat would handle the weight no problem. I would be a little worried about the dogs claws, in the floor especially. I have had to patch mine several times. The latest was when I bumped into a naples sabot with the lee board post sticking off the gunwales. At least I knew I had done it and did not come back later to find my motor submerged (again). I have the 2.5 Yamaha. Its not the most powerful but it works and it does not weigh too much for my wife to carry. Can't offer any opinion about the specific boat you mentioned as I have never heard of them.

Jessie, I have a 8.5 Baltik with the HP floor, had it almost two years now, and like it. When not in use I roll it up and stow it under my pool table. Like Todd said I would be some what concerned about your dogs claws.

I just purchased a Baltik inflatable from afordable inflatables on Ebay. It is all they say it is. I bought the 11 foot model with the air floor ($610) It is $99 for shipping and $9 for insurance. It shipped from california to Ohio in 7 days. Your dog will probably puncture the air floor, you may want to get the wood floor (less money). To give youan idea of the quality, after launching it at our marina - 3 others are buying them from Baltik. Very nice product.

Get the 11 footer - they tend to go cheaper than the 9'6" OR 8'6" models. Fits 5 people or lots of gear. I have a little 2.2 merc for an outboard and it works just fine. A 4 or 5 would be just perfect. The 11 footer will handle up to a 15 hp outboard. I bought a second seat for $29.

PM me if you want more info.

An inflatable floor is a great idea, we have a Zodiac 10'-2". In order to deal with the dog's claws, just buy outdoor carpeting and cut it to the size of the floor with the dinghy deflated, so that the carpeting gets tucked in under the tubes when they inflate.

We got the carpet idea from another cruiser the very first day we took our new dinghy out for a test drive. It also works for those of you without dogs! It keeps the inflatable floor from getting really dirty, which it will do immediately. We've had the carpeting in for three or four years, and may replace it next year if I can't shake all the sand out again! We cut small holes for the valves. It's medium blue, so doesn't show dirt, but not dark enough to get too hot in the sun. Your boat, your color choice.

I also recommend buying the biggest dinghy you can afford, you'll never regret it. You can always run a big dinghy with a small outboard engine. Our 1.2 Johnson served us for many years on our old 8'-4" red WM donut dinghy, and it was great being able to hand the engine down to the dinghy without an engine hoist. When we bought the newer larger dinghy, we used the 1.2 for a while until we found a 9.9 1990 Evinrude 2 stroke at a swap meet for a great price. We then bought a Garhauer hoist which is a great deal and better than anything els on the market - less expensive, looks great, better tackle. In fact, an argument could be made that with a Garhauer hoist, you could buy a nice big dinghy and use your boat's engine to run the dinghy. Just a thought...

I just scored a 9' Avon Redcrest on ebay for the unbelieveable price of $150 Comes with outboard bracket, pump and storage case, but no oars. I'll have to order those seperately, I guess. Still - a great buy!

I have purchased a Saturn S260, about 8.5 feet, and I am very happy with it. I also have a large dog, a lab, that I take with me and it has not been an issue with the HP floor. They are great little dinghies and my wife is very happy now that we have one! I am powering it with Suzuki's new 2.5 4 stroke tht only weighs 30 pounds.

I have not tried the carpeting for the floor but it sounds like a great idea. Also, my Saturn came with a carrying bag that we use when deflated. The reason with only buying an 8 footer was weight. I needed something that I could carry without straining the wife since we do not keep it inflated all of the time.

All in all, you will be happy with the Baltik or Saturn boats.
