Hi All, I got to the boat at noon to finish up a number of projects and after my wife, Annie, got off work she met me at the boat and we finished rewireing the whole boat. We were cleaning up at about 9pm and the sky was clear, the moon was almost full, and the winds were steady out of the south at 10kts. I thought, "what the hey". She was game and by the time we got the boat squared away and under sail it was dark. What a beautiful night. She has never been on a sailboat before and thought it was pretty cool. To keep things calm, I only pulled out the jib. We sailed for about an hour and headed back in. What a great night. We are now heading back over to the boat to pull the holding tank to wash it out and replace all the hoses. If that does not get rid of the stink we will sink the boat! I was going to wait on that project but after the sail last night, we had to drive a half hour home just to return in the moring.....she won't stay on the boat over night because it smells so bad. After we get done with that we are heading over to the S.E. Michigan Lats and Atts party at the North Star Sail Club. Have a great day. Cheers.

Dennis,

Congratulations on introducing your wife to sailing with such positive results.

I seem to remember the subject of your, or someone's, MSD odor issues being discussed here not long ago. Just a reminder in case you haven't heard it already, in fairly scientific tests performed by Practcal Sailor, one brand of waste hose proved clearly superior to the others sold for that purpose. The price of SeaLand OdorSafe hose ($9/ft) might discourage those unfamiliar with its advantages. (Well, just one advantage really.) SeaLand claims 20 times the odor permiation resistance of their competitors' hoses. I think Practcal Sailor found the difference to be more like 3:1 or 4:1, which still justifies the difference in price to me!

I should also mention 1-1/2" OdorSafe is a bear to work with. It's incredibly stiff. As I recall, there's a thin outer skin on the hose which it's important not to damage during installation. I installed a complete marine head system in my C-25 nearly 10 years ago. I have had absolutely <i><b>*no*</b></i> head odor problems since, even after the boat has been closed up for over a week in the tropical sun with a partially filled holding tank. As you've probably heard before, Peggie Hall literally wrote the book on controling odors on boats, "<i><b>Get Rid of Boat Odors: A Boat Owners Guide to Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor</b></i>". (If you order the book, don't forget to click through our website ships store links.) I followed her advice carefully, and haven't regretted it. If you would like more info on the details of my installation, check the archives, or ask!
