On Saturday I installed my cam cleats for the jib sheets. This photo shows what I decided to do:

Placing it here at this angle allows me to snap it in and out from the windward side. Granted, I do have to reach down and place it under the cleat, but once there, you can easily make adjustments. I find it so much more convenient and adjusting the headsail is now so quick and easy. With this setup I can still use the cross sheeting method in heavy weather by just taking it back around the cleat. So far I am very happy with this modification.

Nice solution Justin, it looks like one that a lot of people ought to consider.

Hey Justin--did you take that picture on my boat?? Oops--guess not--I don't have that second winch on the coaming. But that's exactly how my camcleats are positioned.

Oh good! I got the idea from you, but never saw a picture so I wasn't sure the angle behind the cleat. Thanks for your tip!

Quite frankly, I think clam-cleats are a big potential DangerBob! I learned a neat trick from an old-timer in the marina who solos on a Oday 24 further than most of us. And he saw my criss-crossed cleated line - ya know figure 8 style - and he say's "ya see this heayeer, this nah, this ain't gonna work. You see on a boat this size, you wanna be able to release the line quick like, ya see..." he then proceeded to show me that 3 good wraps around the stock cleat really did hold the line and could be whipped off in an instant from the other side of a very heeled boat in a gust.. Clam-cleat for the roller furling line, that's a good one... But I've had clam cleats under such pressure that they are nearly impossible to break. I've never had a problem with the oval wrap described. But as the old-timer says "whatever I do on my boat, it's wrong on your boat.'
