My 8 HP Johnson has given me great service but I have decided its time to replace it.
Thinking about a 9.9 HP Yamaha 4 stroke which is available with electric start and either a 20" or 25" shaft. Whats the thinking on the best shaft length to use??
Anybody used this moter or have thoughts on other brands I should be looking at. Incidentally, this will be used in salt water.
I would appreciate any input.

I don't know anything about the Yamaha (I have a Honda), but definitely get the 25" shaft.

I would go for the longest shaft available. I have the Honda 9.9 and find it to be a great engine for my boat. Japanese outboards are great and you will find that most in that category are going to be very good. I know people with the Tohatsu, Yamaha, and Honda and all parties really like them.

Going to a 4 stroke is great due to noise reduction as well as great fuel economy.

I LOVE My Nissan. In the past month, I have put 20 hours on mine fishing, crabbing and sailing. I have used only 5 gallons of gas putting around at 4-5 knots. I now have 58 hours total on mine and it has yet to hiccup (knocking on wood).

You might want to try lifting a Yamaha 9.9...they are very heavy. I switched to the Tohatsu 9.8 Ultra Long Shaft and have never been happier with a motor. My Yamaha was very sensitive and wouldn't start half the time due to some tiny particle in the jets. I had purchased it used so it might not have been properly cared for...the weight was my primary factor.

Roger... I agree with you about the weight. Both the Yamaha and the Honda are very heavy for sailboat use.

The various brands using the Tohatsu motor are more suitable weight wise to sailboat needs.

Even so, the Tohatsu is not ideal. In my opinion the ideal motor would be a true 8hp but Tohatsu went the same route as Honda and their 8 is a detuned 9.8 and thus still heavier than it needs to be.

Roger;
I went through the same decision process last year, I had a great Honda 9.9 but my wife could not pull start the engine. So we went with a 9.8hp Nissan electric start. She has no problem starting this engine with the pull cord, but of course uses the electric start. One other option I considered was the Honda 7.5hp (I think) Classic. It looks just like the first 7.5hp honda that I purchased back in the early 70's. A grat quiet, ecconomical engine. Only available in manual start, but as I recall, very easy to start.

My newer Honda 8 is amazingly easy to pull-start (which I've only done once), but certainly is heavy. I think the Yamaha is even a few pounds more, and the last I looked, had no pull starter... The Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 seems good (and about 15 lbs. lighter with the XL shaft), although it only has a year or two behind it. FWIW, the Honda has the strongest alternator at 12 amps.

Go for the 25" shaft!
