Does anyone have good experience or advise about how to reinstall a halyard inside the mast? When I went to re-rig the boat this season, my jib halyard was neatly coiled and stowed, not where it belonged! Thanks.

My jib halyard recently broke at the masthead. I sent a small, wiry guy in a bosun's chair to the top of the mast with a new halyard. He lowered it down the inside of the mast (I had sewn a smaller line to the end and attached a dozen lead fishing weights to give it some heft) while I removed the exit block and retrieved the halyard as it dropped low enough.

Now, if you're talking about how to do it while the mast is unstepped, I can't help you there.

If the mast is unstepped, get a wire snake - the kind electricians use to pull wiring. You can get one at Home Depot pretty cheap.

If the mast is up, Steve's system is as good as it gets.

When I was moving the boat last weekend, I also lost my main halyard in the mast. I went to Home Depot and purchased a 200' roll of wire used to string a cloths line ($4.50), lowered the mast onto the crutch and then used a little duct tape and attached the halyard to the wire and pushed it through the mast. It really wasn't that big of a deal at all.

I really didn't feel that safe going up on a bosun's chair....

If the mast is down, use the Backstay as a snack, it's easy to get it to run from the masthead down to the cutout. We did ours on launch day when I screwed up and pulled the wrong line at the masthead. Takes about 5mins. (2 people makes it real easy.)

If the mast is up, the back stay is in use
