A couple of my turn buckle "black plastic ends" have cracked and no longer stay fitted in the ends of my chrome covers. Has anyone found a source for replacements? I see that Catalina Direct has the hole kit, but I'm not wanting to spend $32 for the plastic ends.
Tom, Mine are in terrible shape also and I was aware of the price a couple of years ago, so I just wrap mine now in black electrical tape with a little care and trimming. I do all five so they all look the same. Actually my first mate does it for me after rigging and does a good job.
The turnbuckle itself is made by Garhauer Marine. The top and bottom black insert covers are around a buck each - Garhauer didn't really have a price on just the covers ('no one has ever asked me that before'), but they will sell them to you. Their number is 909 981 2364.
IMHO, forgive me for weighing in here but... You are missing a chance to upgrade to open turnbuckles, I bought a complete set of the modern ones, used them for a year and took them all off and replaced them with real turnbuckles. The Garhauers are difficult to adjust, difficult to lock into place, difficult to observe for problems, the brass edges are way too sharp to handle safely, they have too many parts, they roll when laid down, etc. Catalina Direct sells wonderful open turnbuckles. These turnbuckles are an example of style trumping function and that is not the bristol way.
