Today I was able to participate in what our church calls "kids University". We set up things for kids in the community to do to give them a chance to participate in something that they would normally not get a chance to do. My "University" was to teach them to sail.
What a fun day for 3 kids and their parents and our youth pastor and my wife. We sailed for 3 hours in light air at first to heavier air later. Each kid was able to take the helm, work the sheets, and just about everything they need to know about sailing. They got to hang off the rear ladder and get cooled off, ride the bow, and even spend some time runing around below in the cabin. They had fun.
We started at the dock and when it was all over, we moored and was able to give them a thrilling ride in the inflatable back to shore, getting them all good and wet!
I know they got a good taste of sailing for mid-easterners. We don't seem to get alot of younger people interested in sailing in Ohio.
We where able to do this by getting one of the parents not only to sign off for insurance purposes, but also to come along and be responsible for their own kids. We supplied the life jackets and made the kids wear them at all times. These were 10-11 year olds and were old enough that we were able to keep their interest and keep them busy with all the things required to prepair to sail, sail, and then get the boat ready and closed up on the mooring. Fun and work.
They all wanted to come back!
If any of you have the chance to get involved in a program like this, I would encourage you to participate, it is very fulfilling. Make sure you provide proper equipment and sail during safe sailing weather and be cautious about potential dangers that may come back on you legally in the event of something happening that is out of your control. That said - have some great fun sharing your sport.
Turk, I'd like to take that idea to my church staff. Do you have a listing somewhere of what other courses your church offered? A church website perhaps?
Pastor Scott head of our children's program puts together adults who can teach a small group of kids, something he thinks they would be interested in. Sailing, cooking, painting, just about anything. It is then set up as a one day to two or three week program that happens over a month during the summer. Kid's university is open to the entire community, not just the kids in our church. It is not offered as a "preaching" opportunity but only as a structured activity for the kids over the summer.

'Sounds like a great program, and I have no doubt the kids and their parents had a wonderful time. Kids need to know that there is more to this world than video games, myspace.com, and TV. Unfortunately, many parents let their kids get lost in mind-numbing activities like those, instead of spending time with them. Introducing kids to sailing shows them there's more to life than Nintendo.
Keep up the good work ... you & your wife get a gold star!
