Does anyone have or know where I can get a manual for the DS-1 Standard Horizon depth sounder. It came with the boat but no manual. It seems to display the depth correctly, but it alternately flashes 2.5 in the display. I am wondering if this is the boat depth offset (I have a SK). I am not sure if it is malfunctioning or if this is a feature. If it is a feature I would like to know how to change the setting.
I don't know if I can help, I have the original '83 Catalina depth sounder manual The manual lists it as a DS 10 digital depth sounder. I also have the Horizon DS 45 sounder manual. In the DS10 manual the shallow gain adjustment is an an adjustment screw in the center of the back of the meter. Turning to the right increases gain and to the left reduces gain. It mentions turning to the left to decrease sensitivity to wakes and aerated water which may cause false indications of shallow depth. Decreasing gain too much may cause you to loose contact with the bottom. They recommend experimenting with gain until you have an accurate reading.
I think you might try recording exact depth at rest in your slip with a boat pole or such device and then adujust the gain screw until you have the right reading. You want to mark your depth from the waterline to the water's bottom on your pole.
Thanks Val, I'll take a look on the back of the instrament and do a little exerimenting. What is still mistifying me thought is why it seems to flash between two numbers. One appears to be the "true" depth, and the other either a false reading or showing and offset of some kind. However, as you have explained the DS 10 it doesnt seem to have an offset. So maybe it is being disturbed by the wake or bubbles and it is a sensitivity issue. I'll experiment a bit at the end of the coming week and post the results of what I discover.
Thanks again Val you've given me a place to start.
