I am looking to buy a 1980 Catalina 250 swing keel, and I would like to know if this is a good seaworthy boat for short offshore one day trip where rough conditions could be present... Example, 25 to 30 miles strait crossing in a variety of conditions. Any info about how this boat does sail would be welcome... Thanks
...and if you do post your question on the C-250-specific forum, the actual terminology is "centerboard" (on the Water Ballast model). On the C-25, it's referred to as a swing keel because it is the ballast (1500# of cast iron). But they'll know what you mean either way...
If you're talking about a 1980 boat, then that would make it a Catalina 25. The Catalina 25 is really intended for moderate coastal cruising and lake sailing. It's generally robust enough to stand up to some rough conditions, but IMHO that's only if you can't avoid it. The swing keel version is less robust than the fin keel and wing keel versions, because the swing keel weighs 1500# and is suspended by a pin and a cable. While the swinger works well in ordinary conditions, it can swing and pound when the boat is leaping off the tops of steep waves.
The C25 is a great boat, but I wouldn't buy one with the specific intention of sailing it in heavy weather. There are other boats that are expressly designed for that use.

Maybe I should practice my reading!
If you are thinking of sailing from NB over to NS or PEI or Quebec or conning the coast to Maine a C25 with a swing keel would be fine. Make sure you read some of the old threads on this site about maintenance of a swinger before you buy and make sure you get the boat surveyed before you buy. If you post pictures and info about your boat on this site, you will get lots of qualified responses. I sail my 1981 C25 Swing Keel between Vancouver Island and the Mainland - about the same as sailing from NB to PEI.
