Can the mast head support me if I attach a myself to a harness and get someone to winch me up to the top for some work? Any stories welcome. Hopefully none of anybody falling. . . Although that might be a little funny if it all turned out. Any safety tips and techniques also will be helpful. I just have visions of me laying with my back broken on the bottom of the boat.
You don't say if you have a C25 or C250, but I think at 180 lbs you could do either. Make sure you attach both halyards to your bosuns chair if possible & remember to take up the slack on both. Go slow & be safe! Oh, and make sure you have everything you need with you before you go up <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>
We've done it, actually we've done it while underway and at the dock, The Jib halyard was used as the hoist, the spin halyard the safety line and the main halyard was used with a bucket for all the stuff we forgot to send up with the the guy. The bigger question though is why try. The boat is made to easily step and unstep the mast. Drop it down, make your repairs and put it back up.
Duane makes a good point. But I have done aloft (I'm 200 #+), but usually send someone lighter. I have mentioned before on this forum that I use a long line through 2 "ratchet blocks", one hoisted to the masthead. You can hoist YOURSELF up in this system, but someone still should be around for the 2nd safety halyard. I wouldn't EVER go up on one halyard...I also have an updated/oversized rig. But, usually, it's easier to drop the mast for anything other than a really quick job: i.e. replacing masthead fly, etc.... Gary B. Encore! #685 SK/SR and Suede Shoes #496
