My information is just from observation. Going down would not be a problem. Boaters do it all the time. You would want to switch over to the TenTom by going through Kentucky Lake rather than going on down the Mississipi past the Ohio. I understand the river is a little rough and there is a lack of good places to stay. By switching over to the TenTom you would come out at Mobile Alabama rather than New Orleans but would have a much more enjoyable trip and would go through many lakes on which you could sail. The Mississippi is to narrow in the marked channel to sail with the barge traffic in my opinion so you would be under power. Many sailboats make the trip down from Lake Michigan to the Gulf for the Winter but it is mainly a power boat thing. Fuel is a big problem as in places you must cover over 100 miles to the next fuel stop but this can be overcome with extra fuel storage and some advance planning as some service stations will make delivery. I am not sure what quanity they would require but it would be more than my 3 gal. tank. Time is also another factor as you are talking of 3 to 4 weeks to make the trip.
I live in St. Louis and cross the Mississippi and this is just based on observation. I'm sure you will hear from someone who has made the trip and knows more about it. If you do it...I'm sure it will be a good adventure trip and something to remember.
At the bottom of the page you'll find more links. The top two describe sailing/motoring from Chicago to Mobile, Alabama; part of it on the Mississippi.
