Yesterday, enroute to Fleet 24's cruise to the Corsair Yacht Club on Catalina Island in very light air, I raised the main to steady as we motored. The motor began cavitating, i.e. jumping up out of the water despite it's long shaft (Tohatsu 9.8). I finally realized we we on a starboard tack and were heeling a bit to port which was lifting the starboard mounted engine out of the water. Dropped the main, eliminated heel, no more cavitating. So if you want to use your sails for steadying while motoring, be sure you do it on a port tack Live and loin.
