I have been dreading refilling my tank as my marina, as well as every gas pump in Delaware has gone to the ethanol mix and I keep heating horror stories about stalling, gunking up, recommended in line fuel water separators etc etc etc. Anyone have any first hand experience? I have a Honda 4 stroke 8.
Willy, Most of the problems I have heard revolve around those people who have internal fiberglass fuel tanks. The ethanol apparently interacts with the fiberglass creating a gunky mess which ends up in the carbureotor or injectors. I don't think it will create problems for your 8HP Honda. According to Honda you may use gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol by volume.
I had unfortuneate results when mixing old gas(with MTBE)and it's replacement oxygenator ethanol. I have no idea what transpired in that tank but it wasn't pretty, took the old two stroke out. Still haven't taken the carb off to see what happened. It was cheaper to replace the motor than fix it at the local Johnson Shop.
I drove to Maryland...only 11 miles from my slip and put good ole MTBE gas in there so I have staved off the problem for a couple of weeks. While the big argument against MTBE seems to be the problems incurred when it spills, used properly it burns cleaner, provides higher octane and better gas milage. My understanding is that Maryland is fighting the switch pretty hard so I may have the rest of the season before having to deal with this. Val, the link provided by Steve further up this string will explain why 2 strokes are more vulnerable and what happens when the fuels (MTBE & Ethanol) mix. This just seems so political...under the guise of patriotism we are doing something that makes no environmental or economic sense...but a couple of corn producing states lobbied to "get er done"
