I know the subject of replaceing the keel cable has been discussed, but I have never seen an answer as to how to fix the turning ball. I am replacing the steel cable with the new vextran line kit. But the turning ball appears to be frozen and has a groove from the old cable.
Does anyone know if this ball can be replaced, or should it be replaced?
Jim, I have never read of anyone replacing the turning ball, that doesn't mean it hasn't been done. Every fall and spring I squirt the heck out of it with WD40 and rotate it the best way with what ever I can get up in there with. I would think maybe with the centerboard down or removed and the cable removed you might be able to free it up...
Jim I found mine frozen and tried every pair of pliers I have to try to free it and just could not get hold of it. What I ended up doing was to drill a hold in it, off to the side of the cable slot, and put the drill bit in the new hole and used that to slowly free it up on the shaft. I needed two holes one on each side to get it turning freely all the way around. I used lots of wd40 on it as I freed it to flush out the dirt and salt. You may want to smooth out the flat spot so the cable rolls the ball. I couldn’t see any way of getting the ball out of the boat.

If I recall correctly, someone once commentd about replacing the ball. I can't recall if they chiseled out the resin in the area, used a hole saw or how it was done.
thanks, I did contact Catalina earlier this week and to my surprise they have a repair kit. Part # 71082. It is a tube that has the new ball already mounted. You cut out the old ball and then slip this tube inside the existing tube from the top until it protrudes just below the hull.
Costs $156.25, but it is an easy fix for the problem. And I suspect that most of the keel cable failures are a result of this ball wearing out, so I look forward to getting it replaced.
The instruction sheet shows to drill a hole at the top and insert a 3/8" pin, then reinstall the hose and clamps. I have not gotten the part yet but it looks pretty easy.
And I made a mistake on the part number, it is 71083.
