without changing the shives in the mast head or the routing? I may be dropping my mast next week and I figured that I would make this change since I was there. Cheers.
You will probably have to change your masthead sheaves. I have wire to rope halyards and have delayed changing over to all rope because my sheaves were designed for wire. I'll order new sheaves and make it a spring project. there are a couple good old threads on the site with pictures. I did searches under halyards and masthead and came up with some good responses.
Dennis - I replaced both my halyards with 3/16" hi-tech line, spliced into a 5/16" stay-set tail. I didn't have to change the sheaves nor take down the mast. 'Twas an expensive way to go but as a racer I didn't want all that weight aloft with the regular size line. (Breaking strength of the 3/16" is 4,500 lbs...) Derek
Dennis, the new sheaves for 5/16 or 3/8ths line are not that expensive. I'd suggest going internal as well. But that will require some cutting and drilling. I believe the modification is in the tech tips.
Dennis - the 3/16" is center spliced into the 5/16" (done by JSL) and I just butt-sewed the old halyard to the new and used it as a "messenger". I needed a 5/16" tail to hold in the clutch. Derek
