Heading for our first real race this weekend, a three-day job, casual in atmosphere but with 30-40 boats competing in several classes. This is one of those events where "everyone is welcome" but it's also evident who knows what they're doing & who doesn't. Though I dinghy-raced a little in high school, my only recent experience came earlier this summer in a light-air beer-can race where all of four boats participated; therefore I'll attempt to avoid humiliation by asking you my brethren for practical tips. I know a few basics, right of way, etc., but ask those of you with experience to chip in on these two questions:

What should I Do?
What should I Not Do?

Find someone that's been around awhile and does pretty well and watch what they do.

Ask lots of questions of the racers that are doing better than you.(Racers love to show how smart they are).

Until you get the hang of it, I wouldn't try to beat the crowd on the start. Some of those folks are agressive and very, very good.

These two general rules will address 99 percent of the situations:

Leward boat has right of way over windward

Starboard tack has right of way over port

Don't ever, ever hit another boat, even if you have right of way. Hail them and protest them, if needed.

If you're ever in doubt, yield right of way. It's a lot easier than sitting thru a protest later.

Don't forget to HAVE FUN. If you win, that's great too.
