Does anyone have a source for the White Rubber Tips that fit on the props for the Companionway Hatch? I tried tape and it cut through...looked high and low at Lowe's, etc..but nothing that small size. Thanks.
I had one of the hatch prop ends go out a year ago. I just so happened to have a small tension rod at the house that had the rubber end on one side that fit perfect. The other side of the tension rod was too big. This year the other hatch prop failed. I used some of that self fusion rigging tape and made many wraps on the under side of the hatch prop pole. I need to check it again, but last time I looked it was doing okay. You may want to check out the curtain section of the store, only you may need to buy two rods to get the parts you need. $$
I found some 1/2" furniture tips from Ace Hardware worked well. My store here only had black, which are working fine .... they don't make black marks. I also found some 1/2" white tips at another hardware, but I'm waiting for the black ones to wear out before trying them.
I think the problem must be that the metal leg cuts through the rubber. Anything that might resolve that would be beneficial. However, the cost of replacement is so low that it's probably not worth worrying about.
Paul. click on the pic for my favorite sailing photo.

Maybe a drop of epoxy inside the tip and allow to cure would strengthen the tip to last longer.
I had access to a machine shop and turned down a piece of polypropylene rod to the shape of a mushroom. The small diameter is a press fit inside the tube and on the bigger end I put a nice radius. I installed them about 4 yours ago and do not see any evidence of ware yet.
I retired almost 4 years ago and don't have access to a machine shop any more. I think I have one extra in my tool box and I can find it, I can take a picture and post if if anyone wants to look at it.
You could make them easily using a plug cutter on a piece of starboard. I only have 5/8" 1/2" and 3/8" cutters. If I recall correctly, the tubes are 1/2 outside dia. So could cut out a pair of 1/2" plugs then use the dremmel to thin them to fit inside the tubes with a lip it should work. That'll be one of my 'rainy weekend' projects.
