I've got a Nissan 8 XL, and it's leaking oil or gas. It drips little drips from the front side of the shaft, just above where the shaft and lower unit join (right above the "check oil" screw). The drops give these little rainbow sheens in the water.

The stuff is grey and looks like used motor oil. My crew says it's water--probably mixed with oil. Any idea where it's coming from? I also noticed that there's petroleum (oil or gas) coming out of the hole in the front of the motor (next to the choke) where my alternator wire comes out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Bruce,
It sounds like your lower unit may have water leaking into it. I would pull the unit and drain the lower end. If the oil is grey it is getting water inside. Probably a failing seal. You can replace it with new oil and probably make it to the end of the season. The lower end oil is not subjected to the abuse the engine oil is and can take a little moisture as long as it is not left in there indefinitely. Just my opionion, but I have an old 62 Johnson that has done the same thing for 20 years. I just replace the oil occasionally. Add it to your "to do" list.

Bruce, If this is a new motor that you are talking about,( perhaps bought from On-Line Outboards), if so I'd check with Chris at On Line. Their motors carry a three year warantee.
I have the Nissan 9.8 and though the tilt is a shaky part of the design, it is in every other way an excellent motor. Any oil/gas dripping is something that I would pay immediate attention to.

I'm baaaaaack!

I have a Nissan 2 stroke and it is a great little engine (9.8) and I have not noticed any oil droppings, but I agree with Val, it is something that should be looked into.

I have a Nissan 8 hp 2-stroke (I think it's a 1997 model). It has a tiny drain hole on the leading edge of the the joint between the lower unit and the shaft housing. I think it's to drain all the water out when the outboard is tilted up. So, it might be water with a little oil/gas mixed in - like your crew says. In which case it might not be from your lower unit. Is your's a 2-stroke or 4-stroke engine?

Thanks. Mine is a 2-stroke motor. I'll have to take another look to see if it's coming out of that little drain hole.
