A couple of weeks ago, we raised our mast back to the vertical position after adding a furler. All of the shrouds and stays are once again tight and the mast is straight side to side. I still have to plumb it, but that should not present much of a problem. One item I forgot was to re-tighten the maststep pivot bolt. It has a wingnut on it and I was wondering if hand tight is sufficient, or should I apply more pressure using a wrench and channel locks?

Not sure if it makes any difference, but we have a 1985 C-25 Standard rig.

In my opinion 75% of the earth is water for a reason. That's why I sail.

It only needs to be finger tight...that is why it has a wing nut.

Wouldn't a lock-nut be better? The nut carries no load but you don't want it to fall off.

Personal comfort zone; I use a nylok nut.

PO didn't use a bolt. When he raised and lowered, he stuck a screwdriver in there. When he got his standing rigging secure, he pulled the screwdriver out.

First item I ordered from CD was the proper bolt and wingnut. The person I spoke to at Catalina told me essentially what dlucier wrote above.

On my 1977, it has a tube that goes through the mast step and mast and when the bolt is tight, there is 1/64 side to side slop of the tube.

All of the loads are downward, but still want that to hold. We drilled a hole in the threads of a longer bolt, put a nylond on and then a cotter ring.

That's one item you don't want to fall

Thanks everyone, I like the idea of having either a nyloc nut, or a cotter pin just to make sure it stays put.

Yep, furler is on and the sail has been cut down with Roger restitching the sunbrella cover. Still have to get back to the boat and hoist the new sail, but as you probably have seen in another thread, we are headed to a wedding this weekend. Will get to it in another week or so. Then all this year's projects are done and it is sailing time The weather is just about perfect now.
