Do you guys leave the electronics on your boat all the time? It's about 85 degrees here today - when I opened up my boat at lunch it was very hot in there, to say the least. I have a depth finder, handheld VHF, GPS, autopilot, and electronic wind speed indicator (about the most useless boat unit I ever spent) in the cabin. Is it a bad idea to leave all that stuff in there? I'm not worried about theft, but it's an awfully hot, humid environment ..
Hi Steve, Speaking as an electronics (Motorola 2-way radio) tech of over 30 years, I can tell you that most equipment does not like temps above 130 degrees. Humidity is not a major concern if the equipment is manufactured for marine use, but over temp is. The equipment will live thru high temp in an unpowered state for extended periods, but doesn't want to operate in such an environment. That said, I live in SW Louisiana (95 degrees as I write this) and we're currently servicing computers mounted in the trunks of police cars... you can imagine the conditions! I leave my stuff on the boat and just air it out and let things cool down before I power anything up.
