I received an email from the fellow developing this product. It is is a nearside half slip whip. It looks like it has promise to me. What do you half slippers think? How would you want the product improved to make it perfect for you? (No, of course I have nothing to do with this product)

Hi Frank, my first impression is that it is a solid idea. I would want the boat end to be able to attach to the existing cleats if possible and I would also want to make certain that vertical motion is enough for rising waters and large passengers. Cheers.

Vertical motion shouldn't be a problem (as long as you have a floating dock in a tidal area). I have one recommendation based on experience with transom brackets for mooring boats in the absence of finger docks and outer pilings: Be sure this device has an upward (or downward) angle from the dock to the boat so that sideways pressure is translated into a upward or downward pressure on the boat, which will merely cause it to rock a little. If the device is dead-level, sideways pressure will create a direct impact force at the mounting point on the boat.

That said, with one finger dock, the right combination and placement of spring lines can keep the boat off the finger with less stress on everything. If on the other hand you tie up along-side one dock with no perpendicular finger, this device could help. (I might like the overhead bows better.)

Looks like the price of a couple of good fenders and also looks like it could actually work better than them too. I'll copy the add and get ready for next season.

I think we all wish we could come up with an idea that would pay for our habit. This guy seems ok and he seems to have an ok idea... good on him.

I've seen that device posted on craigslist.org a while back. I have thought about it since I have a bulkhead slip. I currently use fenders with a 12' 2x4 to ride up and down the pilings. When I first saw that device I was wondering how strong it would be. I see they make them with stainless steel fittings now, so that would be better. Still, I wonder how durable it is. I'd like to see one in person before I bought one.
