I'm starting to look at new sails. A few of the discount (off the shelf) sailmakers list measurements. Most have a luff of 28'6". How does that compare with those who have bought sails from Ullman or similar and have a "full hoist genoa" to get maximum sail area on the CDI furler.
Hi Kip, I had a custom sail made by Gary Swensen at Ullman Sails Ventura Ca. I have a CDI with a full length luff extrusion, (some are cut too short!). I measured by raising a tape and came up with 28'6" for the length of the hoist, I subtracted 6" for stretch and ordered...
Flat cut 135 for high wind performance and less bagging when reefed (no foam) a full hoist of 28' low foot to optimize sail area 7.? oz cloth (one click heavier than a normal 135, for high wind) Dacron UV cover (white) telltales at least one with a window a set of telltales at 100% Web straps rather than cringles at the head and tack, (per CDI instructions)
I went with a 135 because of our prevailing high wind, I break out a drifter in really light stuff. The sail has been flawless. The sacrificial dacron for the solar protection is not nearly as heavy as sunbrella and looks nicer. It will not fail for enough years that it will be time to send the sail in for a tune-up anyway. The webstrap instead of cringles in important so you are not wrapping a metal cringle against a plastic extrusion.
Frank, thanks for responding. I agree some are too short, my luff measures 27'7". Actually, my whole sail is shorter than most, I think. The leach is 26' , the foot 16'4" and the LP is about 15'2" and it's suppose to to be a 150. This is one of the reasons for new sails, not to mention they're original. I did check out your pictures, and the sail looks to fit well, not too short, not too long. I've seen some where the luff comes almost down to the drum, most of the CDI advertisments are like this. You mentioned stretch, anyone know how much a sail stretches in 10-12 yrs. I guess that's a question for the sailmakers.

You're right. It's a question for each sailmaker, as to the kind of sailcloth they use and how they put their sails together.
